Let’s talk about Zika Virus
This virus is a disease caused by the family of the flavivirus and transmitted by the bite of a genus Aedes mosquito; the same one causing Dengue, Chicungunya and Yellow Fever.
Agencies investigating these outbreaks are finding increasing evidence of a relationship between Zika virus and microcephaly in newborns, although more research are needed to understand this relationship. Also they are investigating other possible causes.
Zika virus symptoms are similar to those of other arboviral infections, including dengue, and include fever, maculopapular rash, conjunctivitis, myalgia, arthralgia, malaise and headache; usually they last between 2 and 7 days.
What you can do to prevent getting infected:
It is very important to follow these tips to help prevent the infection, especially in pregnant women, children, sick and elderly as there are currently no vaccines for the prevention of the virus and despite not being mortal as may become as Dengue, their annoying symptoms can be prolonged. Here are some preventive measures:
- Dispose the garbage containers no longer in use and can accumulate water.
- Wash and clog water containers.
- Remove accumulated debris.
- Use repellents every 3 or 4 hours in no covered body areas.
- Keep unused tires indoors.
- Install mosquito screens on windows and use mosquito nets.
